The last five championship games clash with the Sri Lanka tour (tests only) and the Australia tour  (T20 and ODIs).  Hartley could miss all of those, when Lyon is also missing, but probably wont Bashir and Ahmed will have a say in that, even Leach, although Hartley may carry a lot of drinks this summer.  Just hope ECB don't keep releasing him for days 2 & 3 & 4 only.

Lancashire may rely on their belief that Wells and Bell are top line spinners or recall Morley for the final run in (dependent upon where they are in the table).

Lancs had more than a chance if they had a full season productive of Jennings, Wells, Bohannon, Bruce, Salt/Bell, Balderson, Hurst, Bailey, Williams, Mahmood/Anderson/Aspinwall/Wood, Lyon.  Good as anything in the championship, better than most.

Chris, yeah I agree that if all players were always available Lancs have a decent squad, but injuries and internationals will weaken that.

My main reason for being negative though is the North West English weather. And an Old Trafford pitch that doesn't seem result friendly. And the Lancs management always seems to be able to shoot itself in the foot. Maybe that changes with a change of coach.

I agree: Lancs look very strong on paper but a combination of weather, dead home pitches and poor management (unless Benkenstein is able to overcome the Lancs culture and be his own man) will produce the usual underachievement.  Not convinced that Hartley will take red ball wickets at OT but would be delighted to be wrong.

England have T20 games against Pakistan starting on the 22nd May so I think that will mean that he is only available for the championship games against Kent this week and Notts next week and could then be absent until the end of June depending how far England get in the T20 World Cup, possibly longer if he is going to be involved in the Tests. Which I suggest means that the game we need to rest Lyon for should either be this week or next week.

Also makes a huge hole in the squad for the Blast.  I guess the T20 side will have to revert to being captained by Jennings.

That does seem harsh. Hard to see what he has done wrong in relevant cricket ; nothing since the end of the Indian tour is really relevant to what he might do in Pakistan.

A while ago in a meeting of Liverpool Competition officials, one asked the question “ Who would you want for a season ? Tom Hartley or Tom Sephton ( Northern’s consistently prolific slow armer ). The answer was unanimously the latter.

Ormskirk’s captain talking about the recruitment he has done in the last three years said they had replaced Tom Hartley with Toby Bulcock , the latter whom he described as the best non first class left armer around.  Again , I would say it was a better replacent.

I’ve never rated Hartley since I first saw him bowl for Ormskirk. I only said it a humanitarian point of view. The game is a very cruel one mentally and I hope England will have been sensitive in communication with him. I have little faith in Lancashire doing a good job that way , so I just hope England do it better than they did for Simon Kerrigan.

I see Tom Hartley as a white ball bowler. I think we should be developing Morley and Barnard to be our red ball slow left armer.
