Worth looking back to my post the other day ; glad I did post it then and not after the event. Clearly Derek Pringle ( whom both Oldham Exile as I rate as a journalist) knew something when he said you didn’t need to be a big spinner or flighter of a ball in India , citing the fact that Panesar outbowled Indian spinners over there.

Maybe we didnt need to sign Lyon after all? Maybe we should turn old trafford into a spinners paradise RobI still think Jack Morley is a high class operator. Wells a useful leggie as well.

Looks like the analysts had something in respect of selections based on height and high release point, plus the accuracy Des referred to. Was impressed with Tom's post-match interview, he clearly learned and adapted as the match wore on which is impressive in a young and relatively inexperienced cricketer.
He bowled beautifully in the second innings as his figures illustrate, just a shame he won't get a chance to bowl on similar pitches in England.

That's a good shout, if only we had some half decent cover....

I really enjoyed Tom Hartley's success and it is interesting that the experts can make a successful selection on a player's bowling style, physique and temperament. The downside to this is that it will give the likes of Rob Key the confidence that successful test players can be picked based on a hand full of first class games, white ball cricket and franchise cricket rather than wanting to pick a player who bowled 400 overs and took 60 first class wickets in an English domestic season.

He can only be picked for the IPL as a reserve if he was in the original draw. And doubt they would pick a foreign spinner anyway, Rashid is rarely picked up.
Morley would be a good fill-in anyway, he is a more classical flight bowler.
England contemplating an all spin attack- maybe lancs will go Hartley, Wells, Lyon, Morley? Just need a bit of medium pace from Bailey to take the new ball.....

Come next summer when England will likely play just one spinner - Leach - then will there be room in the Lanc's team for Hartley with Lyon in the squad? I suppose Hartley could play as an all rounder...

Evidently a better second innings bowler at this stage of his career. Will learn alot from this tour. Excellent fielder for a spinner as well.

I've been impressed with his attitude in these matches, but we shouldn't believe that he's suddenly going to bowl teams out for Lancs. English pitches are very different to Indian pitches.

He bowled well enough again today but is struggle to believe lancs will play two spinners other than late in the season with lyon in the team. He will play plenty of white ball cricket though.

One of Hartley and Morley will suffer lack of opportunity this summer ( unless Hartley first choice in Test) . Having said , I’ve always been in favour of top class overseas players ( as opposed to middling ones). Both can surely learn a lot from Lyon.
