As David Lloyd said recently, if Lancs are ever going to win matches regularly at OT, they need either to change the playing surface or to employ bowlers who can get people out once the new ball has worn off. So they need a really fast seamer and/or a really good wrist spinner.

I'm not against playing the kids as long as we get some variety in our bowling. Granted, Mahmood has been injured. But injuries happen, and we should have an alternative whether they are overseas or not. Morley has looked better, but its August and aren't spinners supposed to come into their own in August in English conditions? We need someone who takes wickets like Harmer does all season. With the bat, I think we need to be consistent as we can with where we play players in the order and trust them.

I'm happy with foregoing an overseas batsman and relying on the young lads, but we definitely need an overseas bowler. Scott Boland perhaps?

We arent short of fm bowlers- need someone with a bit more gas imho, Wood and Mahmood if fit and available would definately help.

Hope I'm wrong but I have doubts that Mahmood will be able to continue as a fast bowlers. . Same here MITS. If he has a future (and hopefully he has) then it could be limited to white ball cricket. Right now with the amount of injuries he is picking up he is going the same way as Richard Gleeson.

I hope not, Mark Wood and Jamie Overton have had endless injuries but have managed to keep their pace.
Sadly quickies seem to break down constantly, Archer and Stone being recent examples.

And it can be a variety of injuries. Elbow, shoulder, backs and knees seem to be bad for quickies.

It’s the fact that he has had two stress fractures of back that worries me as well as all the others. I’m no medical man obviously but I can’t remember any fast bowlers who’ve had that twice though couple of greats have recovered from one. On the other hand, I can’t remember any slow bowlers having one until Jack Leach but Michael Atherton said it was common in them too.

Yes I agree. Mahmood will be lucky if he isn't forced to stop playing.

Reece Topley has had I think five stress fractures, and Olly Stone at least four, Topley at least is playing at the moment and bowling at a decent lick.
Stone is about as injury prone as Archer unfortunately.

Jesus, tough being a bowler. There must be some kind of recommended schedule that bowlers should follow regarding how must work they should put on their bodies. Amount they bowl, how often they bowl. At bit like in baseball where starting pitchers are supposed to get some many days rest between starts and are supposed to pitch so many balls per game before they get pulled.

Don't remember Fred Trueman, Brian Statham or Ken Higgs getting stress fractures. Perhaps it was called something else then, but don't remember them getting injured much at all and they bowled a lot.
Athers had to give up bowling his leg-spinners pretty early on. Parky has suffered at least one stress fracture.

Don't want to compare eras, but I think the stresses modern athletes put on their bodies now is far greater than in the past. I know, they look after themselves better now too, but at the end of the day any human body can only take so much.

Maybe but they played far more games e.g. in 1989 there were 48 1st eleven games of which Paul Allott played in 41 and bowled 766 overs and Mike Watkinson played in all and bowled 840 overs. I think they just played through the pain...
