Maybe a last resort to play Lamb but I don't think they'd ever have played Jones. The difference is that Lancs decided to off-load Lamb, whereas Jones made his own decision. It's all about loyalty and control. Lancs 8 for 1 - Wells strangled down legside: didn't look to have hit it but followed the ball round the corner and gave the umpire a decision to make. Never understood why batters do this - chance of a boundary much less than the chance of getting out. Pitch is obviously a used one - batting last could be tricky (if we get that far - poor forecast for Saturday).

They have claimed on twitter that Blatherwick and Wood picked up niggles in the warm up. That leaves a few questions, at least:
- Is Lamb there yet? When did he join up the squad? Why even!
- No-one plays through niggles these days?
- the squad is clearly wafer thin in reserve, to the extent that when they made a decision who to play was Lamb at the ground already? Even though he is leaving Chapple believes there is no else to call up. Not Croft, not Hartley who must have been there.
- so no faith in Aspinwall even as fifth seamer after the wicket takers and after Balderson and Mitchell.
- it's an admission that there is no consistency in the way that they are treating their players, or just a deliberate action against Parkinson and Jones.
- clearly having listened to the commentary from the start, Scott Read does not know what is going on.
Can't see how TPTB at OT can be happy with what's going on.

If it's true that Wood and Blatherwick were ruled out by "niggles", it's extremely worrying that there's apparently no seamer in the 2nds who is considered good enough to call into the side, rather than resort to a bowler who they have already decided has no future at the club.

Yes. Chapple is lucky that, when he was a young player of promise, he got plenty of chances to learn in the 1st team. I really thought last season that Chapple had moved away from the Watkinson-inspired culture of regarding anyone under 26 as a beginner but it looks as if we are reverting.
84 for 3 at lunch. Could have been for 1 as Wells was, arguably, sawn off and Bohannon lost patience, slashing at one that wasn't there to cut. Salt got a good one which came back a long way, causing him to inside-edge onto the stumps. Probably would have been better staying at 6. Anyway, 3 down at lunch having been put in on a worn, damp and slow pitch is no better than par from Warwickshire's point of view. Might go along tomorrow, weather permitting.

Had a result this morning, went the ticket office to pay, they asked if I was a member, I said Lancs thinking it wouldn't matter, they said it's free as we have a reciprocal arrangement, I was too stunned to correct them that it doesn't apply when Lancs are playing! |
